Spice up your breakfast with this typical Spanish tapa: Pan con Tomate
When you think about a typical Spanish breakfast, one thing comes to mind: Churros. Yes, churros and hot chocolate (or coffee) are still Spanish number one, especially on the weekends, but there is another breakfast staple that is very common: Pan con tomate! To translate it directly, it's tomato bread. When you say it like that, it may not sound very attractive or different, but it is actually so delicious and so simple (and vegan!) that you may ask yourself why you haven't thought of it for years.
Ingredients:
- Sliced bread
- Tomatoes
- 1 garlic clove
- Olive oil
- Salt & black pepper
Preparation:
Toast the bread slices. While they are getting brown and crispy, take your tomatoes and cut them into quarters and start grating. (Do not put it in processor, because it will come out with a much more watery consistency.) Do not add the skins of the tomatoes. Put a little bit of olive oil, salt and pepper on your grated tomatoes and mix it in a bowl. Peel a clove of garlic and cut it in half. Smudge the garlic on your warm, crispy toast to add flavor. Then, pour a tiny bit of olive oil over the bread. Finally, cover your garlic bread slices with the tomato sauce you prepared. (If you want, you can also put a little thyme on them). Ready!
If you are not vegan, you can also put some cheese or salami on top of it. As you can see, this is a recipe that is very tasty, quick and easy to make at home. Next time you are having brunch with your friends or family at home at the weekend, you can put some Pan con tomate on the table for your guests to try, or you can serve it as an appetizer before lunch or dinner. Either way, it takes no time to make and adds a lot of freshness and flavor to any meal!
